CARROLL, LEWIS. ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND Wood-engraved illustrations after John Tenniel. 8vo, original red cloth, gilt-decorated,
a 1-inch tear along rear joint, spine ends and fore-corners a little worn; front hinge cracked, a few minor margin repairs; custom full morocco folding case by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, following the cloth binding's design. New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1866 FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Comprising the original rejected sheets from the London 1865 issue with a cancelled title-page (New York: D. Appleton, 1866). The original English copies were withdrawn from the London market due to Tenniel's dissatisfaction with the printing of his illustrations. Carroll agreed and had the entire edition withdrawn from the London market. These copies were then sold to D. Appleton & Co. of New York, who issued them as the first American edition in 1866 with the cancelled title. Williams, Madan, and Green 44.
