OUTDOOR SCENES. Quarter-plate daguerreotype of two figures at the reins of a horse-drawn American Express wagon, with gilt details on the horse's harness; with a modern seal, in a leather case, separated at the hinge. 1850s (THE AMERICAN EXPRESS WAGON) A WONDERFUL AND FASCINATING IMAGE "in which the wagon, horse, and drivers stand out in bold relief against a snowy street. The words American Express are very clearly painted along the body of the wagon (they appear in reverse in this image). The figure on the driver's bench closest to the camera is that of a young man in heavy winter clothing who dangles his leg casually over the edge of the wagon's seat. A charming little girl in a large hat peers timidly out from behind him. Snow cakes the boot of the young man and has built up on the front wheels of the wagon. The suspension system of the wagon is clearly visible as is the harness of the horse which is equipped with bells." [SEE ILLUSTRATION].
