HUNTER. Wonderful half-plate daguerreotype of hunter wearing a straw hat and neckerchief posing with his dog and a double-barreled shotgun; with a modern seal; in "The Monument" leather case, separated at the hinge. 1850s This fascinating image yields up a treasure trove of detail to the observant eye. The hunter's outfit, his straw "boater," dandyish neckerchief, rough woolen coat, and highly polished boots are all wonderfully visible. On the rifle, which is a double barrel muzzle-loading shotgun, the triggers and hammers for both barrels are clearly discernable. The object slung across the hunter's shoulder is a leather flask designed to carry birdshot. The only slightly blurred feature of this otherwise crisp image is the hunter's boisterous spaniel who, one feels sure, is anxious for the hunt. [SEE ILLUSTRATION].
