Sixth-plate daguerreotype portrait of James Harper, co-founder of Harper Brothers Publishers, and Mayor of New York City from 1844-45; hand-tinting to the cheeks; in a full leather case. 1840s
- Notes: James Harper and his brother John founded J. & J. Harper Printers and Publishers, which is now known as Harper Collins, in 1817. The business quickly grew and employed about 1000 people in the 1850s, publishing the popular "Harper's Weekly," "Harper's Bazaar," and "Harper's Magazine. " Harper's political career was short-lived due to his commitment to his business interests. He was elected by the American Republican Party, a nativist organization, and defeated the Whigs in 1844.
