CECIL BEATON (1904-1980) Greta Garbo, Plaza Hotel, for Vogue. 1946; printed late 1970s.

CECIL BEATON (1904-1980)
Greta Garbo, Plaza Hotel, for Vogue. 1946; printed late 1970s.
Silver print, the image measuring 9 3/8 inches (23.8 cm.) square, with Beaton's credit stamp and a copyright stamp on verso.

  • Condition: Beaton's stunning portrait of Greta Garbo, Plaza Hotel, for Vogue, 1946; printed late 1970s, is overall in very good condition. The print is rich and dimensional, with a compelling tonal value and bright highlights.

Under close examination in raking light, we can notice a few small areas of faint discoloration. As visible in our online catalog, the two most visible ones are located in the wall on the left quadrant. There is also an exceedingly faint discoloration in the curtain, and on the extreme upper right edge. Otherwise, the surface doesn't evidence any flaws. These slight inconsistencies are not at all immediately apparent and do not detract from the overall composition.

The print has no margins, and the extreme edges evidence some minuscule tiny chips, including rubbed corners with a bit of loss on their tips, and including a small vertical hard crease on the lower right corner, but this also remains minor und unobtrusive.

The verso evidences scattered discoloration pattern as well, which might be related to processing, but it doesn't impact Beaton's credit stamp and the Vogue copyright stamp on verso.
