39 3/4x50 inches, 101x127 cm. W.E. Berry Ltd. Bradford.
Condition A: minor creases in margins and image; unobtrusive vertical fold.
Cecil King, born in Britain, was best known for his naval paintings, but also produced landscape paintings and a few posters. As King's passion was the sea, this more industrial scene of a LMS Princess Royal Class steam locomotive is atypical of his work. In his image, a painting entitled "A Winter's Evening," King emphasizes the power and energy of the dynamic locomotive. The dramatic lighting on the billowing smoke, presented in a complementary pastel palette, effectively evokes the streetlamp-lit atmosphere of a wintery evening in England. The treatment of this train and station echoes the oeuvre of contemporaries, Norman Wilkinson and Terence Cuneo.
