E150/250 The site for Central Park was purchased in 1853 after several years of debate on its cost, size and political control. In 1856, the commissioners began discussing the layout of the park and a year later held a contest to determine its designer. This pamphlet, which appears to predate the contest, argues that there are very important structural considerations that must take precedence before becoming too involvedin the landscape design.
