(CHAGALL, MARC) The Jerusalem Windows

CHAGALL'S UNUSUAL MEDIUM (CHAGALL, MARC.) The Jerusalem Windows. Text by Jean Leymarie. Two color lithographs; numerous reproductions. 4to, cloth; front hinge tender but holding; dust jacket, light edgewear. New York, (1962)

inscribed and signed by chagall to helen mills, with an ink drawing on the lithograph statement page. Accompanying the work is hand-edited 4-page typed draft of a talk written by Mills on the occasion of Chagall's visit and participation in a conference sponsored by the Center for Human Understanding in Washington, D. C., April 1963. In it, Mills describes Chagall's drawing in this book: "[Chagall] honored me on my birthday with a ballpoint pen and lipstick drawing . . . of a tree growing out of a hand, topped by a bird in flight. Below, beneath a slender moon he drew a lady, listening. Then using the lipstick of a friend, he put some heartlike flowers on the tree, a bit of color on the woman's cheek, and then, with a playful gesture, he completed her innocent nudity with a dab and another dab of red."
