CHAMBERLAIN, JOSHUA L. Autograph Letter Signed, to Carroll E. Pennell,

"I WAS TELLING THE STORY OF GETTYSBURG" CHAMBERLAIN, JOSHUA L. Autograph Letter Signed, to Carroll E. Pennell, affectionately thanking for the a gift of a bouquet of flowers, and mentioning having recently recounted stories about the Battle of Gettysburg at the [Leedy?] Grange Hall. 3 pages, 8vo, written on a folded sheet; horizontal folds, small stain affecting one word on third page. With the original envelope. Portland, 11 September 1905

". . . [T]hank you for your bright and cheering presence on the evening I was telling the story of Gettysburg to our good people at the Grange Hall, but also for the sweet remembrance in the lovely birthday bouquet so soft in its tones of color and so daintily bound by a 'true-lover's knot' of white silk ribbon. Permit me to say it was all like the character of the giver. Be sure I shall cherish both the token and the thought. Little things like these go to make the sweetest things in the world. Indeed they are part of what we hold dearest.
"There is a fragrance of this bouquet which will not perish with its material substance, and the card with its white silk knot I am keeping in my little treasure-drawer. . . ."
