Number 579 is Chappell's first-hand description of the ramming and sinking of the Nantucket whaler Essex by a whale in the Pacific, and the aftermath. The episode was first recounted by Owen Chase, another survivor, in his 1821 Narrative, a key source for Melville's Moby Dick. Huntress 241C.
