CHARLES ALSTON (1907 - 1977) Untitled (Abstraction).

CHARLES ALSTON (1907 - 1977)
Untitled (Abstraction).

Oil on canvas, circa 1959. 711x1270 mm; 28x50 inches.

Provenance: estate of the artist; thence by descent to the current owner.

This untitled work is a beautiful example of Charles Alston's mid-century abstract idiom. Alston painted in this style through the late 1950s and early 1960s. This unsigned painting from the artist's estate is closely related in palette and composition to his Once Upon a Time in a Garden, 1959, also in the estate, and illustrated in the Kenkeleba Gallery retrospective catalogue. A founding member of the Spiral Group in 1963, his works became less abstract after 1964. Jennings p. 51.
