CHARLES ALSTON (1907 - 1977) Untitled.

CHARLES ALSTON (1907 - 1977)
Untitled.

Oil on canvas, circa 1946-49. 610x508 mm; 24x20 inches. Signed in oil, upper left.

Provenance: estate of the artist; thence by descent to the current owner.

This mid-century abstraction is one of the earliest of Charles Alston's abstract canvases we have located. While devoid of the figure, the cool, biomorphic abstraction is closely related in its spatial sense, paint application and palette to one of his early modernist canvases, Palaver, #1, 1946. This work was also in the estate of the artist, and was illustrated on the cover of the 2003 Studio Museum in Harlem exhibition catalogue, Challenge of the Modern, African-American Artists 1925-45.
