CHARLES ALSTON (1907-1977) Untitled.

CHARLES ALSTON (1907-1977)

Untitled.
Charcoal on thin paper. 330x274 mm; 13x10 7/8 inches. Signed in pencil, lower right. Circa late 1930s.

Provenance: the estate of Ray Blanco; private collection, New Jersey.

This modern sketch by Charles Alston is potentially a study for Magic in Medicine: Study for the Harlem Hospital Mural, New York City, 1936, or one of the other murals he executed in the late 1930s. The woman depicted is structured after the African objets d'art Alston had studied - a wellspring of inspiration that pushed his practice forward. Alston was a proclaimed disciple of Alain Locke, the acknowledged "Dean" of the Harlem Renaissance. The aesthetic choices are reminiscent of Alston's Girl in a Red Dress, 1934, and Tobacco Farmer, 1940.

  • Condition: The sheet is secured to its mat by masking tape along the upper edge, recto. There is a rectangular area of even time stain across the image. There are minor scattered losses around the edges and 3/4-inch stains in the lower-right quadrant. Otherwise, in good, clean condition on delicate tracing paper. Framed.
