CHARLES BURCHFIELD The Freight Train.

CHARLES BURCHFIELD
The Freight Train.

Watercolor and pencil on paper, circa 1920. 300x450 mm; 11 3/4x17 3/4 inches. Ex-collection private collection; thence by descent.

With an authentication from Nancy Weekly, Head of Collections and the Charles Cary Rumsey Curator of the Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo, dated June 16, 2015.

Nancy Weekly, Burchfield Scholar and Head of Collections and the Charles Cary Rumsey Curator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, writes in the accompanying report, "trains and rail yards were subjects in this style circa 1917-1920." Around this time, Burchfield began edging more towards realism, and started creating compositions showing industrial development and city architecture. This shift was solidified after 1921, after he moved to Buffalo, New York, and increasingly depicted urban scenes, often with a slightly sinister mood (mirroring his discontent with living farther away from nature).
