Charles Carroll of Carollton

Autograph Letter Signed to William Gibbons, "Ch. Carroll of Carrollton,"

discussing business concerning [Carrollton Manor farmer] tenants and wheat threshing, with a postscript: "The 2 row wheel wanted for the threshing wheat machine of which a model was sent by Ben Clark will be finished by Wednesday." 1¾ pages, 4to, with integral address leaf; docketing and notes written in unknown hand, inlaid.

[Baltimore?], 15 April 1822.

  • Notes: "You are right, Shipley should be credited with 9 days more than he was credited in the statement I sent you; the 9 days I make worth $7.50 with which I have credited his accounts.
"I desired Mr. Cason to send the two . . . serving pots by Ben Clark. Luke, Mr. Cason's servant, tells me they were not sent, but were sent to some shop to be mended, and probably are not yet mended.
"I am pleased to hear you have opened accounts with the tenants on the manor . . . and as I have also raised accounts with them our statements will check each other.
"I am glad to hear the crops of wheat and rye are so much improved since the moist mild weather. When does Mr. Dean think he will [be] finishing threshing wheat? I suppose he will soon finish, as Clem tells me there are not more than 3 stacks of wheat remaining to be threshed.
"I am happy to know all are well at the Manor, except two of my people & they not being dangerously ill, I hope will soon recover."

Carroll lived the longest of any of the signers of the Declaration, past his ninety-fifth birthday in 1832. He spanned the centuries, having been among the earliest patriots and a member of the Annapolis Committee of Correspondence in 1774, and then later in his life a member of the first board of directors of the B & O Railroad.
