Charles Cornwallis

Autograph Letter Signed, "Cornwallis," to "Dear Turner,"

encouraging him to stay through the end of the month or longer, thanking for £200 and requesting that a document be sent via [George?] Ward, expecting to make Ward Quartermaster and Fielding after him, further expecting Turner to be given a company of men and Burnett to receive the Light Infantry. 1 page, 4to; silked on verso, all edges and few separations at folds reinforced with gauze verso, remnants of hinging at corners and upper edge verso, folds, docketing verso.

  • Notes: "I have not the least objection to your staying 'till the end of the Month or longer if it is agreeable to you. I am much obliged to you about the 200£, I hope it is not inconvenient to you. I must insist on executing the bond immediately, you may send it down by Ward. I was very anxious to make him Q'r Master, Fielding will succeed him, I shall then have rewarded my three best Serj[eant]s. You shall certainly have Collins's[?] Company, Burnett will be glad of the Light Infantry, we have profited by the late mild Weather. Lady Cornwallis sends her best Comp[liment]s to you . . . ."

    During 1771 in Britain, as Colonel of the 33rd Regiment of Foot, Cornwallis was honing the skills of the men under his command. In August 1776, the regiment traveled to North America to join the main British force and participate in a number of major engagements including the Battle of Yorktown in 1781 that ended the Revolutionary War.
