First edition, four volumes, a mixed set with first two volumes and Appendix in full publisher's green cloth; volume III, Darwin's Narrative of the Surveying Voyages, bound in very good contemporary half calf with marbled paper boards, skillfully rebacked with the original gilt spine panel very neatly replaced (volume three slightly smaller than the clothbound volumes); cloth volumes also similarly expertly rebacked, preserving the original spines; illustrated with 47 plates; 7 maps and charts (6 loose and housed in pockets inside the boards); clothbound volumes with ownership signs of James and John Yonge, along with bookplate of Meyer Friedman, M.D.; cloth: 9 1/4 x 5 3/4 in.; half-leather 9 x 5 1/2 in. (4)

Freeman 10.

Darwin's volume, his first published work, records his daily observations as the Beagle's chief naturalist, recounting the many unique plants and animals he observed on the Galapagos Islands. These experiences informed and illuminated his perception of the nature of survival of living creatures and the structural changes that can arise and sustain survival. These insights, his theory of evolution, changed human understanding of the nature of life forever.
