Charles de Rochefort (1605-1683)

Histoire Naturelle des Iles Antilles de l'Amerique.

Rotterdam: Chez Arnould Leers, 1658.
Quarto, illustrated with added engraved title and numerous text engravings of natural history subjects of the Americas, including plants, mammals, fish, and more; bound in later half brown morocco; with early unidentified ownership stamp with the initials FL to engraved title; 20th century rubber stamp of historian and archeologist of pre-Columbian Venezuela Luis R. Oramas (1884-1967) to title verso; 9 x 6 1/2 in.

"The missionary purpose notwithstanding, Rochefort was very good at describing the flora and fauna of the Antilles, especially the plants.  And he provided attractive engravings of many of the tropical plants he described. [...] You will notice that Rochefort, unlike Piso, liked to depict natives interacting with the plants, which makes his engravings even more attractive, from an ethnological point of view." (Quoted from William B. Ashworth, Jr.'s "Scientist of the Day" blog published on the Linda Hall Library website.)
