First edition, first issue, octavo; Smith's second state, with title printed in red and blue, "Stave I" as the first chapter heading, the balance of text uncorrected, and the 2-page publisher's advertisement present at rear; illustrated with a hand-colored frontispiece and three plates by John Leech, as well as four wood engravings by W. Linton after Leech; rebound by Prost & Bawl in full green gilt-stamped morocco, two gilt-lettered red morocco cartouches to spine, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, with the original rose-brown publisher's finely-ribbed cloth and green coated endpapers bound-in at rear (some toning and foxing to plates, frontispiece just starting at upper edge; pale offsetting to title, creasing to a couple of pages, occasional minor stains and spots; block and original cloth trimmed approximately 1/8 in.); housed in custom patterned paper pull-top box; 6 ¼ x 3 7/8 in.
