First edition, Eckel's second issue, octavo; title printed in red and blue, with "Stave I" as the first chapter heading, the balance of text uncorrected, and the 2-page publisher's advertisement present at rear; illustrated with hand-colored frontispiece and three plates by John Leech, as well as four wood engravings by W. Linton after Leech; in the first state binding: rose-brown publisher's finely-ribbed cloth blind stamped with decorative border surrounding a central gilt cartouche and lettering on front board (the closest distance between blind decorative border on the left and the nearest extremity of the gilt cartouche measuring 14 mm and the "D" of Dickens perfect), yellow coated endpapers, all edges gilt (offsetting from plates, scattered spots and minor stains; spine lightly faded, lower joint starting, headcap reattached, cocked); housed in a custom red morocco-backed slipcase and chemise; 6 3/8 x 4 in.
