Charles Dickens

Autograph Letter Signed, to "The very Reverend / The Dean [of Peterborough, Augustus Saunders],

looking forward to visiting [to do a reading at the Corn Exchange building], remarking that he may decline an invitation in the fall because of plans to travel to Rockingham Castle. 2 pages, 8vo, written on first and third pages of a folded sheet, pale blue paper; horizontal folds. With the original envelope, addressed in holograph and additionally signed, with cancelled red one-penny postage stamp showing Queen Victoria's head in profile, and with Dickens's garter seal on flap.

"Tavistock House" [London], 29 January 1855.

  • Notes: "I feel particularly obliged to you for your earnest letter. Allow me to assure you that it has afforded me great gratification and that I now look forward with a new interest to my visit to Peterboro'.
"If I should decline your hospitable and most agreeable invitation when we renew our correspondence in the autumn, it will only be because I rarely travel alone on such occasions, and almost invariably appoint some friend to join me at the local Hotel. Two or three volunteers already propose to be of my audience next Christmas, and I shall probably shorted even my short stay by going round to Rockingham. But I do not the less appreciate your kindness."
