CHARLES E. BURCHFIELD

Tree Lined Street.

Watercolor over pencil on cream wove paper, 1916. 225x295 mm; 8 7/8x11 5/8 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower left recto, and inscribed "March 1916" in pencil, verso. With color notations in pencil.

After winning a scholarship to the National Academy of Design in New York, Burchfield moved to New York. There he met Mrs. Mary Mowbray-Clarke, who exhibited a group of his watercolors at the Sunwise Turn Bookshop, and continued to do so over the next 6 years. During this period, his work was characterized by its decorative quality. He would begin his drawings by laying out the design in pencil, then filling in the colors. During the summer of 1916, the year of the current work, Burchfield abandoned the pre-painting pencil notations.
