Charles-Félix Gir

1883-1941

Tabarin. 1929.

Condition B: extensive replaced losses and overpainting in margins; repaired tears, creases, abrasions and overpainting in image.

The Bal Tabarin, a popular night club in Montmartre, was opened in 1904 by Auguste Bosc, a composer of some renown in Paris during the "gay nineties." The club made its reputation with the Belle Époque favorite, the can-can, continuing to perform it long after the First World War, when the craze had all but died elsewhere. In the mid-20s two retired dancers infused the club with new life by introducing the Charleston.

Charles Gir was a painter and poster designer who worked for various theaters and music halls promoting performances and performers, such as Josephine Baker. He also did sketches, drawings, and sculptures based on operas and ballets, which he loved and attended regularly. He often created work for magazines, such as L'Assiette Au Beurre. Gir may be best remembered by a poster designed by his friend Paul Colin, promoting an exhibition of Gir's artwork. This poster has only come up for auction once in the past 30 years. Rare.
63¼x46½ inches, 160¾x118 cm. H. Chachoin, Paris.
