This beach scene is likely of Provincetown, Massachusetts where Charles Demuth frequently summered since his 1914 arrival from Paris. Provincetown during that time was still a small fishing village serving as a summer retreat for New York's vanguard artists and writers. Aside from his initial 1914 visit, Demuth would return to Provincetown in 1915, 1916, 1918, and 1920. During his 1916 summer there, he befriended Marsden Hartley. Demuth was clearly influenced by the Precisionist artwork Hartley was working on. The shafts of fractured diagonals and asymmetry in the present work on paper show that Demuth had begun to include Precisionist and Cubist elements into his own work. The gentle washes of color of this early work may have been inspired by Demuth's interest in Japanese prints; he helped to organize a Provincetown exhibition, "Living Japanese Prints" in 1914.
