CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) CAFE PRECIA. 1929.

31 1/4x23 1/2 inches. Les Belles Affiches, Paris.
Condition A.
In the form of a stencil, the likes of which might have appeared on the sides of crates of coffee arriving in Paris from exotic locales, Loupot creates a clever construction of curves and triangles depicting a native African gracefully pouring a cup of coffee as he balances on a sack of coffee beans. The image of black people to promote coffee had been used since the 19th century, but contrary to many of these representations, Loupot's poster is far more artful and well balanced, a paean to the native people of Africa, not the vulgar or racist ads that were often seen in that era. Zagrodzki no. 83, Musee de l'Affiche no. 37, Nectar nos. 80, 81, 83, Negripub no. 95, p.78.
