Charles Sebree is best known for his paintings of harlequins and theatrical subjects. Born in Kentucky, Sebree emerged from the Chicago art scene working for the Illinois Federal Art Project in the WPA easel painting division from 1936-38. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and taught at the Southside Community Art Center with Margaret Burroughs and Eldzier Corter before moving to New York in 1940. His work is in the permanent collections of the St. Louis Art Museum, Howard University and the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC.
