CHARLES STAFFORD DUNCAN IT TAKES A MAN TO FILL IT. 1918.
42x28 inches. Schmidt Litho, San Francisco.
Condition B: overpainting in margins; foxing and restoration in image.
A very rare World War I poster printed and distributed only on the West Coast. Unlike the Howard Chandler Christy posters which feature women taunting men to join the service, this image leaves even more to the imagination by not picturing a woman, but merely hinting at the reasons a sailor's uniform would be so haphazardly strewn onto a chair. "This strong design continues the concentration on essentials of the best pre-war posters by combining a simple image with a brief text into the definition of military service as a proof of virility" (Paret p. 54). Paret 73, not in Borkan, not in Rawls.
