Pen and ink, with gouache corrections, on illustration board, 1964. 660x533 mm; 26x21 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower right recto. Inscribed "Page One, Frederich (sic) Douglass" in ink on a label taped to the verso.

One of a series of 19 pen and ink drawings by the artist to illustrate this volume. This is only the second drawing from the series to come to auction - the first, After attempting to escape, Frederick Douglass was put in jail,was in the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company African-American Art Collection, and sold at Swann Galleries on October 4, 2007.
