The detailed photographs depict bird's-eye views of mansions and palm tree lined streets of the Hollywood and Beverly Hills areas, the sprawling coast lines of Santa Monica, orchards in the San Fernando Valley, architectural shots of Grauman's Chinese Theater, the Griffith Observatory, and St. Mary's College, and considerably more. Silver prints, the images measuring 3 3/4x4 3/4 inches (9.5x12.1 cm.), and the reverse, the sheets slightly larger, each with Brooks' credit, date, and the notation LA, in pencil, and some with identifying captions, in pencil and ink, on verso. 1952

  • Notes: Charlotte Brooks (1918-2014) was a photojournalist best known for her work at "Look" magazine where she worked from 1951-1971. Early in her photographic career she assisted the artists Barbara Morgan and Gjon Mili in New York City. Her work was noticed by Roy Stryker, and she was asked to join his project at Standard Oil of New Jersey documenting America at home during World War II. When the project ended, Arthur Rothstein introduced her to executives at "Look" where she eventually became the only woman on the permanent photography staff until its demise in 1971.
