[20], 440; [28], 268 pages. 2 parts in one volume. 8vo, 172x107 mm, contemporary panelled calf, rebacked, endpapers renewed; title soiled, with 12 letters excised from words in the subtitle, 2 letters excised from caption title to the introduction on next leaf, few ink blots on T3-4, light dampstaining in lower margins toward end, minor stains and soiling on last page. "The first complete edition of the most famous book in the history of chemistry" (Neville), rejecting prevailing Aristotelian and Paracelsian concepts in favor of Boyle's own corpuscular theory of matter. "The Sceptical Chymist is concerned with the relations between chemical substances rather than with transmuting one metal into another or the manufacture of drugs. In this sense the book must be considered as one of the most significant milestones on the way to the chemical revolution of Lavoisier in the late eighteenth century" (PMM). Duveen, page 96; Fulton 34; Neville I, 208; Wing B4022 (this edition); Partington II, 497-99; Printing and the Mind of Man 141 (1661 original edition).
Accompanied by the 1965 facsimile of the original edition, published by Dawsons of Pall Mall in an edition of 500 copies. 8vo, original 1/4 morocco; contents clean.
