  • Notes: first american edition of an antarctic classic, considered by many to be the best overall description of Scott''s Terra Nova Expedition, on which Cherry-Garrard served as assistant zoologist. It gives the only firsthand account of the "winter journey," the 3-man trip from Cape Evans to the far side of Ross Island during the austral winter to collect unhatched Emperor penguin eggs, since Cherry-Garrard''s companions Wilson and Bowers both later perished with Scott. Books on Ice 6.12; Spence 277.
