The New Instructive History of Miss Patty Proud, or the Downfall of Vanity, with the Reward of Good Nature.

New Haven, CT: Sidney's Press, 1813
Hand-colored woodcut illustrations. 31, [1] pages including wrappers. 16mo, 4 x 2½ inches, original illustrated wrappers, worn and detached; early owner's inscriptions on pages [2], [4], and [5].

  • Notes: This later edition of a 1788 children's classic is of particular interest for its rare and unusual variant wrapper. The front wrapper is headed "Patty Proud," and is illustrated with a version of the iconic Josiah Wedgwood abolitionist image, usually captioned elsewhere "Am I Not a Man and a Brother?" This is particularly unusual because the book does not have an abolitionist theme. We have found no other editions of Miss Patty Proud with this cover illustration, nor is it recorded on other copies of this 1813 New Haven edition.

The woodcut illustration on page 23 was originally created by the famed engraver Alexander Anderson for the 1801 book "The Friends; or, The History of Billy Freeman and Tommy Truelove." This is the only known edition of Patty Proud to include this illustration.

Pomeroy, Anderson 418 and 86; Shaw & Shoemaker 29310; Welch 937.18 (lists 5 known copies with 3 different wrappers, none of them matching the present example).
