  • Notes: first english and first american editions. Part of the trend in folk tales and fairy legends of the mid-19th century, this story was so popular that it was reprinted three times within its first year. Published anonymously, the story was written ten years earlier at the request of 12-yr-old Euphemia ("Effie") Chalmers Gray, whom Ruskin would marry in 1848.
