(CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.) (Warhol, Andy.) Best in Children's Books. Volumes 27 (Containing "Card Games are Fun") and 33 ("Sophocles the Hyena"). Together, 2 volumes with stories illustrated by Warhol. 8vo, boards; dust jackets, only minor wear. Garden City: Doubleday, 1959-60

  • Notes: These charming illustrations are among the earliest of Warhol's published work and are often unknown to fans and collectors of the Pop icon's work. The images of the felines in Sophocles the Hyena, about a cat named Morris who wishes to attend school, hint at the unmistakable face and eyes of Warhol's famous brightly painted pussycats in "25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy" of 1954.
