Color frontispiece and 26 color illustrations. 12mo, original floral cloth, two gilt-lettered white cloth labels on cover, spine somewhat faded and toned, very minor splitting to cloth; neatly recased, chip and restoration to upper inner corner of rear endpapers (Linder 1, used 4 times), some scattered soiling, heaviest at ends, pencil notations on front flyleaf verso. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1903

first trade edition, first issue, in deluxe floral cloth binding. The fabric is from Beatrix Potter's grandfather's factory at Manchester. Only this title and Squirrel Nutkin were bound in this style. Linder, page 423; V&A 1570; not in Quinby.
