(CHILE.) El Monitor Araucano.
Volume 2, Numbers 42, 75 and 80. Together, 3 issues of the scarce Chilean newspaper. 8vo, bound together in modern green calf; minor toning, repaired wormhole in second issue. Santiago, 1814
- Notes: extremely scarce chilean newspaper during the fight for independence. Issue number 42, dated 10 May 1814, contains the Treaty of Lircay between the Patriots, who were fighting for independence, and the Realists, supporting Spanish colonialism. The treaty, which was ultimately rejected, recognizes Ferdinand VII, but stipulates for the Spanish evacuation. This printing, only two days after the original had been signed, is here signed in print by Gavino Gainza, Bernardo O'Higgins, and Juan Mackena. The second issue, dated 2 September 1814, contains news of the threatened invasion of Chile by Mariano Ossorio, the Spanish General of the Army at Lima. The third, dated 20 September 1814, declares Ossorio a traitor and offers a reward of 12,000 pesos for his head. Pre-1817 Chilean imprints are uncommon at auction. Medina, Bibliografia de la Imprenta en Santiago de Chile 64; Palau 176260.
