CHURCH, FREDERIC E. Autograph Letter Signed, to art collector J. Strickler Jenkins, thanking him for purchasing a painting [Twilight: Mount Desert

CHURCH, FREDERIC E. Autograph Letter Signed, to art collector J. Strickler Jenkins, thanking him for purchasing a painting [Twilight: Mount Desert Island, Maine] and praising it as the best sky he has done. With an Autograph Postscript Signed with initials, inquiring about framing. 2 pages, folded 8vo sheet. New York, 23 January 1865

  • Notes: "I received your letter of Jan. 19th [present] in which you express the wish to purchase Twilight which I now have on the Easel. I therefore reserve it for you for the sum mentioned - $3000 in gold - with the restrictions which I defined in my letter to you. Permit me to express my thanks to you for your confidence in my works so conspicuously proved by your readiness to purchase a work - at a liberal price - which you have not seen. I shall make it my aim in finishing the picture to make it the best work of the size which I have yet done... I believe the sky will transcend any sky I have yet painted - the landscape is not far enough advanced for me to speak of except to say that I intend to do my best..."
Church (1826-1900) American painter identified with the Hudson River School, remembered especially for his view of Niagara Falls and for his painting Heart of the Andes, he also traveled widely in New England and Canada painting landscapes.
