CHURCH, FREDERICK STUART. Bound volume containing over 120 illustrated Autograph Letters Signed,

EXTRAORDINARY COLLECTION OF ILLUSTRATED LETTERS CHURCH, FREDERICK STUART. Bound volume containing over 120 illustrated Autograph Letters Signed, each to financier Grant B. Schley, on a variety of topics, but many concerning art. Most signed "Fred." Each letter with an illustration, mostly pen-and-ink but some with wash or colored in crayon, mostly of animals (predominantly polar bears and lions) and women. Also, several letters have photographs mounted to them by Church, images of various women or of works he is sending to exhibition. Each letter generally 2 pages, written on the same side of a folded 8vo sheet; bound in brown crushed morocco, a bit worn; Schley's bookplate on the front pastedown. Carnegie Hall, 1913-17

  • Notes: The illustrations range from humorous cartoons (many featuring self-caricatures) to more studied portraits of women or animals. The content of the letters is excellent, discussing his work, visiting exhibitions and galleries, various sales of his paintings, and questioning the popularity of modern art; some on more mundane topics such as his health, the weather and arranging visits.
Schley (1845-1917) began his career at the American Express Company (which is likely where he met Church, who worked there as a teenager) and quickly rose in the ranks of the business world, investing in--and heading firms in--banking, railroads, mining, business machines, metal refining, and more.
These letters are not included in the Church letters to Schley that are microfilmed and housed in the Archives of American Art.
