CHURCHILL, WINSTON S. Typed Letter Signed, with holograph closing, to his publisher George G. Harrap ("Dear Mr. Harrap"),

SENDING FIRST CHAPTER OF HIS MARLBOROUGH BIOGRAPHY CHURCHILL, WINSTON S. Typed Letter Signed, with holograph closing, to his publisher George G. Harrap ("Dear Mr. Harrap"), sending the first chapter of his book, Marlborough: His Life and Times [not present], describing the scope of the chapter, pointing out that several historical points contradict the accepted view of historians, requesting proof copies, requesting that footnotes be placed after the chapter, and promising to deliver the next chapter before the fall of 1933. 1 page, 4to, personal stationery; folds. Westerham, Kent, 6 June 1932

  • Notes: "You will, I do not doubt, welcome the arrival of Chapter I. It is of course confined only to the narrative and probably will be heralded by some extensive general observations. . . . We have taken a great deal of trouble in verifying all the original sources, and as you see we have upset the long-accepted statements of the historians on numerous points of fact. The chapter is quite different from any of the opening chapters in other books on Marlborough . . . . The footnotes should be printed at the end of the chapter and it will be easier to fit the actual references in their proper places when we see the chapter in print.
"The second chapter is far advanced and I hope to let you have it in about a fortnight. Meanwhile Mr. Ashley has assembled an immense amount of material covering the whole field and including a great many documents which have never before been published. . . ."
