(CIVIL RIGHTS.) Du Bois, W.E. Burghardt. The Amenia Conference: An Historic Negro Gathering. 18, [1] pages. 8vo, original printed wrappers; minimal wear; uncut, one of 200 copies. Amenia, NY: Troutbeck Press, 1925

  • Notes: The Amenia Conference was held in 1916 at a low ebb in the civil rights movement. Fifty leaders with a wide variety of perspectives came from across the country to meet at Troutbeck, the secluded country home of NAACP head Joel Spingarn. The meeting reinvigorated the movement and helped it coalesce around the leadership of the NAACP. Nine years later, Spingarn asked Du Bois to share his memories of this watershed event, which he then published on his own private press. Du Bois wrote that the conference "not only marked the end of the old things and the old thoughts and the old ways of attacking the race problem, but in addition to this it was the beginning of new things. Probably on account of our meeting the Negro race was more united and more ready to meet the problems of the world than it could possibly have been without these beautiful days of understanding. . . . Those who in the future write the history of the way in which the American Negro became a man must not forget this event and landmark in 1916." Not in Partington''s Du Bois bibliography or Afro-Americana.
