(CIVIL RIGHTS--KING, MARTIN LUTHER JR.) I AM A MAN.

(CIVIL RIGHTS--KING, MARTIN LUTHER JR.) I AM A MAN. Poster 22 x 15 3/4 inches; considerably darkened with a 2 x 6 inch chip from the bottom left corner. Memphis, TN: AFSCME, 1968

  • Notes: the iconic black and white sign, which seems to answer the old abolitionist motto "am i not a man, and a brother?" An example of the placard that was carried by the Memphis Sanitation Workers while on strike in the early spring of 1968. Martin Luther King Jr. traveled to Memphis to lend his support to the workers. While there, staying at the Lorraine motel, he was shot and killed by James Earl Ray. This particular poster was consigned by the daughter of the man who carried it.
