(CIVIL RIGHTS)--LOEB, WILLIAM. $100 Billion Blackjack. The Civil Rights Bill.

ANTI-CIVIL RIGHTS ADVOCATE (CIVIL RIGHTS)--LOEB, WILLIAM. $100 Billion Blackjack. The Civil Rights Bill. Poster, 22-7/8x17-3/8 inches, printed in black and white; creases where folded; a couple of small holes affecting one letter in "Blackjack," slight discoloration just to the left of the "$100." Washington, D.C., 1963

  • Notes: Sponsored by the ultra-conservative and sometimes outright racist editor of the Manchester Union Leader, William Loeb and John Satterfield, of Yazoo Mississippi, the Committee for Fundamental American Freedoms mounted a vicious campaign against the Civil Rights Bill, up before the House in 1963. This poster lists all of the complaints against the Civil Rights Bill warning against "total government control." Lyndon B. Johnson was called a "socialist" and a "tyrant" for backing the bill. William Loeb and others on the right warned of an "Omnipotent President," much as today's Tea Partygoers rail against Barack Obama. Later in the summer of 1964, over 250,000 people would march to Washington to support equal rights in America, and to hear Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
