(CIVIL RIGHTS.) Racist flier issued to discredit Daisy Bates, leader of the Little Rock desegregation effort. Illustrated broadside, 14 x 8½ inches; folds, minor dampstaining and wear. [Little Rock, AR]: Capital Citizens Council, circa late 1957

  • Notes: The veteran NAACP activist Daisy Bates (1914-1999) was appointed as agent to help shepherd nine students through the court-ordered 1957 integration of Little Rock Central High School. This flier was produced by a virulent segregationist group, complaining of the prominent role she had been given in the high school. It expresses outrage that she had "authority to cross examine white students . . . lecturing white students at Central High who 'cross' any of her 'brave' nine negro students," that she had "free access to the principal's office," and that after a fight between two girls, "because the white girl would not answer Daisy Bates' questions, Mr. Mathews gave the white girl two weeks in the detention hall." Her mug shots and arrest record are also reproduced--accumulated during a decade of activism. It is headlined "'Mrs.' Daisy Bates, Little Rock's 'Lady' of the Year." In short, this effort to besmirch her character now reads as a memorial to her effective leadership and tenacious pursuit of justice.
