(CIVIL RIGHTS--SEGREGATION.) Dallas Railway & Terminal Company. NOTICE: Chapter XV, Article 1523 of the Criminal Statutes of the State of Texas, Section 5. 'If any passenger upon any train or street car provided with a separate coach or compartment shall ride in any coach or compartment not designated for his race, after having been forbidden do so by the conductor in charge of the train or car, he shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction shall be fined not less than $5.00 nor more than $25.00.' Printed sign, 7-1/4 x 22 inches; some staining, a couple of creases. Dallas, TX, 1945-1956

  • Notes: The Dallas Railway & Terminal Company streetcars were among the most modern and streamlined of the day. Twenty-five double-ended cars were built for the city of Dallas in 1945 by the Pullman Company. They looked more like railroad carriages than the old-fashioned streetcars; and, like all public conveyances in the South, they were of course segregated. But, being double ended, the ironical outcome was that the section for blacks in the back going one way, would automatically became the section for whites on the return trip. This sign would have hung in one of the stations.
