(CIVIL RIGHTS.) Victor H. Green, editor. The Negro Motorist Green Book. 80 pages. 8vo, original wrappers printed in black and green, minimal wear; just a bit of rust at the staples. [New York], 1949

  • Notes: The indispensable travel guide for African-American families, from a time when long-distance travel would be a cause for apprehension about finding lodging, gasoline, or even a restroom. Friendly service stations, hotels, nightclubs and restaurants are arranged by state across the country--North and South. The cover of this edition states "Carry your Green Book with you---You may need it!"

The Green Book was founded in 1936, and was the leader among several similar travel guides. The introduction states "There will be a day sometime in the near future when this guide will not have to be published. That is when we as a race will have equal opportunities and privileges in the United States. It will be a great day for us to suspend this publication, for then we can go wherever we please, and without embarrassment." The Green Book published its final edition in 1966, shortly after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The award-winning film "Green Book" features a copy of the book as a plot point.
