(CIVIL RIGHTS.) "Birmingham Children" memorial protest armband.

(CIVIL RIGHTS.) "Birmingham Children" memorial protest armband. Printed strip of paper, 2½ x 19 inches; folds, moderate wear including safety pin holes, uneven toning, two short tears, ¼-inch hole in church logo. New York: Protestant Council of the City of New York, [20 September 1963]

  • Notes: Birmingham's 16th Street Baptist Church bombing of 15 September 1963 killed four children. The Protestant Council of the City of New York issued these armbands five days later, asking their members to wear them all day on Sunday, 22 September. Thirty ministers also wore the armbands at a 20 September prayer vigil at the United Nations. We trace one other example, at Tulane University.
