(CIVIL RIGHTS.) Flier for a mass rally to save the Fair Employment Practices Commission, featuring Mary McLeod Bethune. Handbill, 9½ x 6 inches; vertical fold with small chip at top. [Washington], 8 July 1945

  • Notes: The Fair Employment Practice Committee was created in 1941 under the leadership of President Roosevelt, with a mandate to ensure "there shall be no discrimination in the employment of workers in defense industries or government because of race, creed, color, or national origin." The committee made some progress in reducing discrimination in government jobs, and many activists hoped that it would be continued in peacetime. With Roosevelt's death in April 1945 and the imminent end of the war, President Truman soon ordered that the committee wind down its operations by 1946. Several hundred attended this rally at Sylvan Theatre near the Washington Monument, but were unable to save the FEPC.
