(CIVIL RIGHTS.) HURSTON, ZORA NEALE. A Negro Author Deplores Segregation Decision.

ZORA OPPOSED BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION (CIVIL RIGHTS.) HURSTON, ZORA NEALE. A Negro Author Deplores Segregation Decision. An article in Truth, Volume 1, Number 1 for January, 1956. Small 4to, original wrappers. Oklahoma, 1956

  • Notes: An article that reprints a letter Zora Neale Hurston sent to the Orlando Florida Sentinel in 1954. The great Harlem Renaissance author "deplores" the decision of the Supreme Court on Brown v Board of Education. Ms. Hurston, who had studied anthropology with Franz Boas, apparently felt that you could not impose moral concepts on folks who didn't agree with them. "Now a great clamor will arise in certain quarters that I seek to deny the Negro children of the South their rights, and therefore I am one of those 'handkerchief-head niggers' who bow low before the white man and sell out my own people out of cowardice." She proceeds to try and make a case for separate schools. Fortunately for Hurston's reputation, Truth Magazine, an avowedly white supremacist publication, did not have a very wide circulation. The entire issue was devoted to opposition to Brown v. Board of Ed.
