  • Notes: The National Negro Committee held its first annual conference in May 1909. This invitation was issued for its second annual conference, to be held of 12, 13, and 14 May 1910. At this second conference, the participants agreed to form a new organization: the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The historic meeting was held at the Charity Organization Society Hall on 22nd Street in Manhattan, better known today as the United Charities Building.
This invitation includes the weekend''s impressive program of black and white speakers, including Clarence Darrow, Ida Wells-Barnett, W.E.B. Du Bois, Franz Boas, and Mary Church Terrell. It also includes a membership list of the Negro National Committee and a short history and mission statement. This invitation was issued to the white educator and activist Elgin R.L. Gould of New York, and is accompanied by his admission ticket. We trace no other materials from the National Negro Committee at auction, nor is this invitation found in OCLC.
