(CIVIL RIGHTS.) Proposed Plan of Organization and Action for the Chicago Freedom Movement.

(CIVIL RIGHTS.) Proposed Plan of Organization and Action for the Chicago Freedom Movement. 17 pages, 11 x 8½ inches; staple-bound in one corner, bound into manila folder on top edge; moderate dampstaining. No place, early 1966

  • Notes: The Chicago Freedom Movement was a coordinated effort by Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations to bring large-scale civil rights organizing to the north. Although it met with stiff resistance, it helped secure passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968.

This internal planning document, apparently drafted by the SCLC, is marked "First Draft, Confidential" across the top. It sketches out a plan for youth culture-oriented Freedom Festivals, and a coordination of efforts with existing community groups to form a "Union to End Slums." None in OCLC or at auction; one is held in the SCLC archives.
